Borgo 4.0: A Pioneering Vision for the Future of Mobility. Naples and Lioni – november 27-28, 2024

Over two extraordinary days, the Borgo 4.0 project showcased its groundbreaking innovations in connected, safe, and sustainable mobility during two key events:

  • November 27: The conference “Transition and Competitiveness: Challenges and Technologies for Connected Mobility” held at Città della Scienza in Naples.
  • November 28: A field presentation in Lioni of the technologies developed under the Borgo 4.0 platform, entitled “The ‘Borgo’ Embraces the Future: Here Are the Technologies. Lioni as a European Model of Mobility.”

These events highlighted Borgo 4.0 as a pioneering initiative that goes beyond traditional automotive innovation to address systemic issues in sustainable mobility, road safety, and the integration of vehicles, infrastructures, and communities.

A Collaborative Vision

Promoted by ANFIA Automotive, the research arm of the Italian National Automotive Industry Supply Chain Association led by Paolo Scudieri, Borgo 4.0 brings together a public-private partnership of:

  • 53 leading companies in the automotive sector,
  • 3 public research centers,
  • 5 universities from the Campania region,
  • and 200 researchers,
with an overall investment of €73 million (€46 million from the Campania Region and €27 million in private funding).

As noted by Valeria Fascione, Campania Regional Minister for Research, Innovation, and Start-ups:
“The Region of Campania has supported this initiative from the start. Borgo 4.0 is not about a single futuristic vehicle or a specific technology, but a transfer of technology that has transformed an entire territory, enhancing the quality of life for communities and enabling advanced companies to develop and test cutting-edge technologies in Campania, beginning with Lioni.”

Borgo 4.0 Technologies: A Comprehensive Vision

Divided into 16 projects, including research infrastructures, R&D initiatives, and real-world testing programs, Borgo 4.0 has developed both material and immaterial infrastructures, creating Europe’s first fully integrated platform for intelligent urban and extra-urban roads.

Technologies Tested in Lioni

  • Massive Data Analysis and Data Fusion Systems: Provide real-time insights into the state of various systems and services to support citizens and authorities.
  • Smart Road Barriers and Road Surface Diagnostics: Intelligent barriers and sensors monitor road conditions for enhanced safety.
  • Adaptive Lighting Poles: Equipped with environmental and traffic sensors, these poles provide real-time situational awareness.
  • Traffic Simulation Systems with “What-If” Scenarios: Help authorities and urban planners make informed decisions.
  • Advanced Video Surveillance Systems: Include sensors for vehicle classification, traffic counting, and environmental monitoring.
  • Talking Road Signs: Use RFID tags to transmit critical information to vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Road Surface Monitoring Systems: Multiparametric sensors analyze road conditions and establish safety thresholds.
  • Ultra-Fast Charging Infrastructure: Reduces vehicle charging times significantly.
  • Biomass and Photovoltaic Plant: Produces clean energy from renewable sources.
  • Control Room: A centralized hub for managing and visualizing mobility data and systems in real time.

Transversal and Innovative Technologies

  • Autonomous Vehicle Systems: Advanced perception and localization technologies enable vehicles to interpret and react to real-time traffic scenarios.
  • Modular Platforms for Innovative Vehicles: Hydrogen and electric-powered modular platforms for next-generation mobility solutions.
  • V2X Communication Systems: Vehicle-to-Everything technology enables seamless interaction between vehicles and intelligent infrastructures, such as adaptive lighting poles.
  • Middleware Development: Kubernetes-based solutions deployed on Edge Cloud and Central Cloud to optimize data processing.
  • Driving Simulators: Virtual demonstrators and sensors monitor driving behaviors and traffic scenarios.

Vehicles Tested on Lioni’s Track

  • Electric Ducato Vans and Minibuses: Evaluated for battery performance, range, and electric traction systems. These vehicles serve as demonstrators for modern commercial electric mobility.

A Model for Sustainable Mobility

With a strategic investment in innovation and research, Borgo 4.0 is proving its ability to transform data and technology into tangible benefits for communities, offering a replicable model for connected and sustainable mobility.

As highlighted by Paolo Scudieri:
“Technologies are seamlessly integrated into a small community, demonstrating that innovation can and must be human-centered. Lioni is a real-world laboratory for the mobility of the future, and Borgo 4.0 is a pioneering model on both national and international levels.”
